Lipitor, made by Pfizer, inhibits the cholesterol biosynthesis, and has become  the standard of care for treatment of hypercholesterolemia. The annual sale for Lipitor is 11 Billion.   Currently, there are six compounds from this class that have been proved for marketing in the United States by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Mevacor, Zocor, Pravachol, Lescol, and Crestor are other five drugs. Baycol,  withdrawn from the market in 2001, was also belong to this class. The side-effect of this type of compounds has been discussed widely, and the real solution of lower cholesterol should be from exercise and diet. By the way, good health is in you hands, not in pharmaceutical industrys' or so called doctors' hands.
Iridium catalyst can insert into N-H bond. Does this catalyst open a door for catalytic amination reactions? This is another catalyst John Hartwig have developed.

Vioxx, made by Merck, a drug for arthritis and acute pain withdraw on Sept. 30th, 2004. There was an increased relative risk for confirmed cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, beginning after 18 months of treatment in the patients taking VIOXX compared to those taking placebo. Worldwide sales of VIOXX in 2003 were $2.5 billion.  Vioxx is a cox-2 inhibitor. COX-2 inhibitors are newly developed drugs for inflammation that selectively block the COX-2 enzyme. Blocking this enzyme impedes the production of the chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause the pain and swelling of arthritis inflammation. Cox-2 inhibitors are a new class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Because they selectively block the COX-2 enzyme and not the COX-1 enzyme, these drugs are uniquely different from traditional NSAIDs.
HX  MacMillan Reagent: published recently, was used in variety of reaction from chiral alkylation to heretocycle ring synthesis.
IBX reagent is a very new and useful oxidative reagent used in making alpha, beta unsaturated ketone from alcohol.
Oxane reagent is a newly developed and very useful oxidative reagent used in a lot of oxidation . You can check google.com for more information.
Shi reagent is used in asymmetric epoxidation with oxane. It has its advantage over sharpless epoxidation and Jacobsen-Katsuki epoxidation.
Urushiol,3-pentadecanedienyl catechol, is the chemical from poison ivy that makes you itch. Humans are the only mammals to have such a reaction.
